Peace Center

UUC's Community Connection!

The UUC Peace Center was established by this congregation in 1984 to act as a catalyst for peace and justice efforts in the neighborhood, surrounding community, at the University and in our own church. The Center seeks to mobilize University students, church members and community neighbors seeking to do the common work of building bridges of justice, goodwill and understanding, providing resources and expertise in a variety of areas effecting our lives together in the City.

An outreach of United University Church, the Peace Center provides opportunities for

  • Educational Programs
  • Community Networking
  • Outreach Programs for Kids
  • Cooperative Justice Seeking Efforts

The Peace Center's hospitable space, library, resources and personnel are available to the community and University to promote the vital work of building those bridges of peace, health, hospitality and understanding in our neighborhood and beyond.

Peace Center Programs
The following are programs of the Peace Center. Please visit our volunteer page to find out how to volunteer for these activities.

Hunger Ministries through A Community Place
UUC supports United Ministry, St. Mark's Church, and other neighborhood congregations in the maintenance of "A Community Place." Specifically, the Community Place provides healthy bag lunches, bus tokens for appointments, referrals to shelters, food and clothing distributors, job placement centers, and a social worker to talk to. UUC supports the Community Place through grant-raising and food support. We encourage and collect food donations at every service and, after the service on the second Sunday of every month, gather together to assemble the bag lunches. "A Community Place" is located at St. Mark's Church (3651 S. Vermont Ave.) and operates from 10:00am-1:00pm, Tuesday-Thursday. Volunteer Information.

Other Community Work
The above program is just one of the ways in which the Peace Center works in our community. If you'd like to find out about other ways to get involved, please contact the Peace with Justice Organizer, Susan Stouffer and/or check out our volunteer page. Peace Center internships are available for those USC or graduate students that seek hands-on experience in faith-based community organizing.
